Why blocked gutters matter

A blocked gutter does not just overflow. Water spills down the face of the wall, soaks into brickwork and mortar, and can show up inside as damp patches, especially on older York homes with solid walls. Standing water also adds weight, pulling gutters away from their brackets, and in winter it can freeze and split joints. Regular cleaning is one of the cheapest ways to protect your roofline and walls.

What our gutter clean includes

  • Leaves, moss, silt and debris removed from all accessible gutters
  • Outlets cleared and downpipes flushed through
  • Water run through the system to check it flows to each outlet
  • A check for leaking joints, loose brackets and sagging runs, with photos where helpful
  • Debris bagged and taken away, and the area below tidied

If we find a fault, we tell you and give you a price. Small fixes can often be done on the same visit with your agreement; see gutter repairs.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

For most homes, once a year is enough, ideally in late autumn or early winter once the leaves have fallen. If your house is near large trees, has a valley roof or a flat roof draining into the gutters, or you have had overflows before, twice a year may be better: once after leaf fall and again in spring. Moss falling from tiled roofs is a common cause of blockages on north-facing slopes.

Signs your gutters need cleaning

  • Water spilling over the edge in heavy rain
  • Plants or grass growing out of the gutter
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia
  • Damp or green staining on the wall below
  • Birds regularly nesting or feeding in the gutter

Prices

Gutter cleaning on a straightforward semi starts from £89. Larger homes, extra elevations, conservatory roofs and access issues are priced on request. See our price list.

Gutter guards: are they worth it?

Gutter guards, brushes and mesh covers are often sold as a way to stop gutters ever needing cleaning. They can help where trees drop large leaves, but they also catch smaller debris and moss on top, can be awkward to clean themselves and do not suit every gutter profile. For most homes, a regular clean is simpler and cheaper. If you are near large trees and keen to try guards, ask and we will give you an honest view for your roof.

Cleaning and safety

Clearing gutters from a ladder yourself is one of the more common causes of falls at home. If you do it yourself, never overreach, keep three points of contact and have someone foot the ladder. Otherwise, a professional clean once a year is a small cost against the risk.
