Common gutter problems we fix
- Leaking joints – the rubber seals in unions and outlets perish over time; we replace the fitting or reseal it.
- Broken or missing brackets – leaving gutters to sag and hold water; we refit brackets at the right spacing.
- Poor fall – water sitting in the gutter instead of running to the outlet; we re-level the run.
- Overflowing outlets – usually a blockage, sometimes an undersized outlet or too few downpipes.
- Disconnected or cracked downpipes – re-joined, re-clipped or replaced.
- Storm damage – sections pulled away by wind, ice or a ladder.
Repair or replace?
If the gutters are in reasonable condition and the problem is local, a repair is the sensible choice. If the plastic has become brittle, several joints are leaking, the fascia behind is rotten, or the system has been patched many times, replacement usually costs less in the long run. We will show you what we find, with photos, and give you both options where they make sense. See guttering replacement and fascias and soffits for what a replacement involves.
Finding the real cause
Water running down a wall is not always the gutter's fault. It can come from a blocked outlet, a downpipe that discharges in the wrong place, a slipped tile or failed flashing above, or water tracking behind the gutter because the roof felt no longer reaches it. We check the whole route the water takes, so you only pay to fix what is actually wrong. If the problem is on the roof itself, see roof repairs.
Access
Most gutter repairs on two-storey houses can be done safely from ladders or a tower. If scaffold is needed, for example over a conservatory, it is priced on survey before any work goes ahead.
Winter problems: ice and snow
Water that sits in a badly falling gutter can freeze in cold snaps. Ice is heavy, expands as it freezes and can crack fittings or pull brackets away, and snow sliding off a roof can bend gutters out of line. After a cold spell, look for gutters that sag, joints that have started dripping and downpipes that have come apart. Getting small faults fixed promptly stops water soaking into the wall and fascia.

Questions about gutter repairs
How much does a gutter repair cost in York?
Small repairs such as a joint, bracket or short section start from £85. Bigger jobs are priced after a look.
Can a leaking gutter joint be resealed?
Sometimes. Often the best fix is to replace the union or outlet, as the seal inside has perished.
Why does my gutter overflow when it is not blocked?
It may not have enough fall, the outlet may be too small, or there may be too few downpipes for the roof area. We check all three.
Do you repair cast-iron gutters?
Tell us what you have when you get in touch and we will advise whether a repair or a replacement makes sense.
Can you come out after a storm?
Yes. Send us photos and your postcode and we will tell you honestly when we can get to you.
